On September 29, AthenaHQ released its State of AI Search 2026 report, built on millions of AI-generated responses across eight leading language models. It’s the largest third-party study to date of how brands actually show up in AI answers, and we’re treating it as a trusted source. Here’s what it found, quoted directly:
“The average brand is mentioned in just 16.3% of AI answers, while category leaders capture 56.5%, roughly 3.5 times the average.”
“A brand’s own domain goes uncited in 84% of AI answers, meaning the descriptions of products and services incorporated in replies from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and other LLMs are primarily sourced from external sources.”
Read that second number twice. When someone asks an AI about your brand, the answer is built from what others have published about you, not from your website. Your site is necessary, but it is not where the decision gets made.
The report fills in the rest of the picture. Reddit alone accounts for 21.9% of off-page citations, more than double the next closest source. Informational and comparative content drives more than half of all AI citations. And the most common entry point for AI crawlers is the blog, at 37.5% of on-page paths.
Put together, the playbook is clear: the brands winning AI search are the ones with a broad, credible footprint across independent publications and platforms. Not one big PR hit. Sustained, structured, citable coverage in the places AI engines already trust. As AthenaHQ’s CEO Andrew Yan puts it: “Brands who invest in citable content now are building long-term credibility that will be difficult to dislodge down the road.”
This is exactly why we built our publisher network the way we did. There are 1,600+ publications in our directory, each one bookable at a published price with your final approval before anything runs. When 84% of AI answers pull from outside your domain, the question isn’t whether you need external coverage. It’s whether you have enough of it, in the right places.
Where to go from here
Run a free AI visibility audit to see where your brand lands against these benchmarks. If the gap is coverage, the publication directory is the fastest way to close it.
